Applications are open for the interest educational program “Get to know the Baltic Sea”

14. February, 2024

Liepaja Municipal Education Department Science and Education Innovation Center (ZIIC) Nature House announces applications to educational institutions for the interest educational program “Get to know the Baltic Sea”, intended for students of grades 9 to 12.

As the project “Development of Innovation Center in Liepāja city” is coming to an end, in the months of March and April, students from all over Latvia have the opportunity to learn the newly developed “Get to know the Baltic Sea” program. The program includes topics such as Baltic Sea ecology, Baltic Sea eutrophication, pollution, Baltic Sea fauna, flora and invasive species, Baltic Sea spatial planning, management, etc. The set of learning topics and activities focus on becoming aware of your habits, changing them to protect our marine ecosystem and promote awareness of its resources.

Of all the activities of the program, the role-playing game “We are planning the sea” is particularly worthy, the inspiration and, in a sense, the idea started at the international Baltic Sea camp “LEARNING BY DOING” at the Finnish zoological research station Tvärminne, in which young people from Finland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia participated last summer.

In order for the game to be closer to real marine space planning, an experienced marine researcher, hydrobiologist Andris Andrušaitis participates in its development. The game will consist of a large-format map of the Baltic Sea and participants will assume the roles of representatives of various fields, such as nature protection, fisheries, energy, military security, etc. The basis of this idea is to give young people an insight into real planning of the marine environment and to gain experience and insight into balancing the interests of marine resources and stakeholders.

The duration of the program is 240 minutes, it is financed from the funds of the project “Development of Innovation Center in Liepāja city”. During the lesson, the students of the class are organized into smaller groups during the activities.

Dates of the program – March 26 and 27, April 2, 3, 8, 9, 10 and 11.

Educational institutions are provided with compensation for transport costs. Additional information on the transport compensation regulations can be found here.
