Teachers are Invited to Apply for Non-formal Education Programs at the Science and Education Innovation Center

The Science and Education Innovation Center (ZIIC) of the Liepaja Municipal Education Department announces applications for the free informal education programs for teachers of different directions, which will be implemented this year on April 18 with the opportunity to participate in workshops led by Norwegian experts on April 19.

In cooperation with Liepāja University and Jaermuseet regional museum experts, two pedagogic training programs have been developed in the ZIIC co-creation space Dabas māja, Zirgu sala 2, and technology co-creation space, Klāva Ukstiņa Street 17/23 within the project “Development of Innovation Center in Liepāja City”. Educators from all over Latvia are invited to apply for educational and practical courses to improve their professional activities, which are based on the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and environmental sciences.

In the Nature House from from 9.30 to 16.30 the program “Eco-technology for the improvement of the learning process” will be implemented. It is suitable for teachers who work with 7-12th graders on a daily basis. The part of the lecture will be implemented by ZIIC experts, Liepāja University lecturer Dr. biol. Ieva Roze and natural sciences laboratory assistant Sintija Ozoliņa. Eco-technological approaches, with the help of which to diversify the learning process, will be examined in teacher training.

Educators will have the opportunity to:

  • make a product, a plant pot, using sustainable alternative composite materials such as algae;
  • learn the eco-printing technique using vegetable dyes. The addition of the workshop will be Dr. biol. Ieva Roze spreading a theoretical presentation about the plant;
  • practically learn the elements of outdoor research using various field, including water research tools.

On the other hand, in the technology co-creation space, Klāva Ukstiņa street 17/23, from The program “Digital production in education” will be implemented from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The program is suitable for educators who work with 7-12 graders on a daily basis.

Educators will have the opportunity to:

  • find out what are the main differences between traditional and digital production equipment and tools, and, through practical operation, get an idea of the principles of creating a printed circuit board with a small computer numerical control (CNC) milling machine, as well as learn the basics of electronics, including soldering;
  • gain insight into design thinking and conclude how to use it in the learning process;
  • to get an idea of the operating principles of the digital production equipment – laser cutter – which will be demonstrated by Liepāja University expert Rogier Jupin;
  • gain an insight into the conduct of scientific research work under the guidance of Maija Demitera, a researcher and PhD student at the Art Research Laboratory (MPLab) of the University of Liepāja.

Everyone can attend the workshops conducted by the experts of the project partner Jaermuseet regional museum on April 19 at 9.00 (workshops will be held in English). Educators are provided with lunch and the opportunity to apply for reimbursement of transport compensation. We invite you to familiarize yourself with the transport compensation regulations here.

ZIIC administration will contact the participants whose reservation will be confirmed. In case the reserved seats become available, re-application will be announced.

Non-formal education training programs or teachers are being developed within the project "Development of the Innovation Center in Liepāja" NFI/IC/VIAA/2020/2, which is financed by the European Economic Area and the Norwegian grant program "Research and Education". Its total cost is EUR 986,049, of which EUR 754,327.4 is co-financing from Norwegian grants, EUR 133,116.6 is co-financing from the Latvian state budget, and EUR 98,605 is co-financing from the municipality of Liepāja.
