Exposition at the Nature House

The installation “Aquaponics System” is an innovative method in which fish farming and gardening complement each other. Plants grow without soil and their roots are irrigated by aquarium water, which is rich in organic matter and nitrogen. The exhibit is supplemented with a time lapse video, which shows the development of a plant from a seed to an adult plant.

The installation “Laboratory of Environmental Sciences”. Environmental science is an interdisciplinary branch of science that studies nature and its interaction with humans. A laboratory is a well-equipped room with special equipment, where scientific research is carried out – analyses, measurements, observations, etc.

The installation “Wind Station“. Wind is one of the renewable energy resources and also a symbol of Liepāja. The installation provides an opportunity to experience different wind strengths and see yourself affected by the wind by receiving a digital photograph to your e-mail address.

The installation “Nature and Biodiversity”. Zirgu Island is a place where nature meets the city. When entering this exposition, we are surrounded by the feeling that nature is all around us – it watches us from the paintings, ambient sounds of nature can be heard, interactive insects, a spider come to life in the tree and conceptually in the very center – a linden tree, which is made of trees growing in Liepāja.

The installation “Kaleidoscope” is a multimedial installation that graphically creates an ornamental and moving work of art with the help of mirrors, which characterizes the interaction between humanity and nature – it is in constant motion and change.

The installation “Exploration the Underwater World”. With the help of virtual reality, visitors have the opportunity to take on the role of a fish and get to know the diversity of the mysterious underwater world. This experience speaks of the fragility of the water environment and the impact of human activity on it.

The installation “Zirgu Island”. The story of Zirgu Island is hidden in the creative research boxes, revealing its natural, historical and cultural values. The learning process is complemented by the overall sound experience, which makes the story of Zirgu Island even more alive.

The installation “Liepājas Metalurgs” consists of a painting and a directional sound system, which allows visitors to hear the industrial activity of metallurgy by standing directly under the speaker. It draws attention to the close connection between Zirgu Island and Lake Liepāja with the once active metalworking factory “Liepājas Metalurgs”. On the other hand, the outdoor installation is a mechanized object, created using spare parts purchased from “Liepājas Metalurgs”.

The installation “Ant House” demonstrates the nest of Australian weaver ants, where it is possible to observe their activity processes – eating habits, building and maintenance of the house, phases of ant development, etc. The other part of the installation consists of Madagascar hissing cockroaches, which are live food for ants.

The installation “Development of a Bird” demonstrates various images of the bird’s development obtained by the holographic method and describes the development of a mallard in an egg by days. It encourages visitors to see and think about the origin of life, the uniqueness of each living being and the life cycle.

“Insect collection” display real specimens of insects and have scientific, educational and aesthetic value. The collections provide insight into the acquisition, assembly, labelling, storage and other processes of entomological material.

The installation “Tyipcal Inhabitants of the Nature Reserve “Lake Liepāja””. The nature reserve “Lake Liepāja” is a NATURA 2000 area, which is a network of specially protected natural areas in the EU member states. Since the encounter of typical inhabitants in nature is limited, as a result of the operation of the installation, the user gets a visual and informative educational experience.

The installation “The Baltic Sea” consists of a painting and a directional sound system that allows visitors to hear the diversity of sounds of the sea coast. The sea provides us with various ecosystem services – it supplies us with resources, regulates environmental processes, provides us with a place to rest, serves as a transport route, etc. – it plays an important role in the development of Liepāja.

The installation “Insect House” is an artificially created ecosystem designed to provide suitable living conditions for insects and give people the opportunity to get to know their secret life closer. The house is as a place for insects to house their larvae, to feed, shelter and hibernate.

The installation “Natural Cognition Research Vessel” (under development).
